Aaaaaaand, I have a summer cold. I don’t get many colds, but I seriously get a cold every time I run 12+ miles at a time. That depressed immune system shizz is for real. Now I just have to avoid all germs from Sun-Tues of each week until my race. No sweat.

I did stay home from work and I stayed in bed all day. I have a 14 miler this weekend and I’m hoping for a miraculous recovery.

So, let’s catch up on the past few weeks. I’m not sure which training week I am in? Maybe 11? There are about 9 weeks left. After my last update, I took a few days (and a long run) off to squash my shin splints.

Then, we went on a short vacation. I was able to enjoy a few runs with this scenery:

And, I got to fulfill my dream of charging a large body of water at the end of a hot, sweaty run.

Cross-training during vacay was bicycling on the beach and kayaking with dolphins. ūüôā

Once we got back, I had two solid weeks and ran long runs of 10 miles and 12 miles. The 12 miler actually felt much easier due to much cooler weather that day.

I had to wring out that headband and wash it. Love summer.

And then I caught a cold and this week has sucked. I ran one (lousy) time. I cannot breathe and I do not have the engery to walk around the block. It’s pretty tremendous.

Keep your fingers crossed for my long run this weekend. I have a feeling it will either be awesome or awesomely bad.

OH FOR THE LOVE OF EVERYTHING HOLY WHAT HAVE I DONE?

Someone get me a Gatorade. A BIG Gatorade. And maybe some gin.

…relatively unscathed. I miscounted weeks in my last post. I’ve been officially-but-not-OFFICIALLY training for six weeks now.

I skipped one short run for no better reason than a headache, but I got through my eight miles on Sunday.

Everything is better with a little faux hawk action.

As far as cross-training, I made it to two yoga classes this week. Hot vinyasa was especially punishing, and I consider it my penance for skipping that short run. Sometimes I like challenging yoga classes, but lately I just like to stretch my legs and breathe. Taking a nap in pigeon? That is all I’m looking for.

Overall, I am feeling better than expected, but I am a little shin splint-ish. To put the kabosh on that, I’ve taken two rest days + ice + aleve. I can’t let that get out of control.

I would probably feel better in general with more sleep and less wine. Ah, well.

Insteresting fact that I knew but did not KNOW until this week? You can get frostbite (frostnip?) from an ice pack. Don’t pretend like you don’t put that shizz directly on your skin. IT HURTS SO GOOD. But, yeah, red swollen itchy spot for two days. Took me a few hours to be sure I wasn’t having some massive allergic reaction. Apparently, that is for real.

Somebody who lives in my house and is not a cat is turning 30 on Saturday!!

I had the clever idea of posting each Sunday to let everyone know how my training was going.¬† That plan was immediately derailed last Sunday by a power outage.¬† I can think of nothing so miserable as trying to blog from an iphone in my 100 degree house, so last week’s post was skipped.

Week three of training actually went well, and I got all four of my runs in.  Three of those four runs were done on the treadmill, since hell seems to have parked itself on central Ohio.  I even got my runs in during a state of emergency, friends.  This may partially be the result of the amount of time spent at the gym charging my phone during the outage, but whatever.  I was a rock star.

Conversely, week four of training was horrible.¬† I started many runs, and finished none of them.¬† We had no power for four days, and then our air conditioning was broken for an additional three days.¬† It was at least 100 degrees on three of those days, high 90s on the rest.¬† I was really flipping hot and surly.¬† Running outside was miserable–I just could not tolerate being any hotter–and everyone has their treadmill limits.¬† Also, my legs have been sore since I increased my running from 3x per week to 4x per week.¬† I tried to make the best of it and did lots of cross-training.¬† You can’t win them all.

We have air conditioning again, so I feel like I can do anything.  Watch out, week five.

In other news, the storm did not manage to blow away my mutant tomato plants.  They are continuing their yard take-over.  Since everything else is dead, it should be pretty easy.

Also I saw this on youtube, and it just tickled me to death.¬† These are my favorite bands right now, and with Bob!¬† Play on if you would enjoy banjo, cello, and the creepiest version of Maggie’s Farm that I have ever heard.

It’s that time of year, folks.

a few signs that you may be training for a marathon

1. You put away the neutral, minimalist shoes, and buy a pair of stability shoes.  They feel like you are running with yoga blocks strapped to your feet, but you wear them anyway.

2. You start getting up at 6am to run before the heat sets in, you know, like you’re serious about it or something.

3. A suspicious amount of Gatorade has found its way into your fridge.  The days always end with ice packs on your ankles.  Suddenly, you have a racerback tan line.  Again.

4. You order a new tube of body glide.¬† You cannot live without body glide.¬† What, your thighs don’t touch?

5. You create a plan that ends with 26.2 on October 21st, the day of the Columbus Marathon.  You start following the plan.

I have been following this plan for a few weeks now.¬† And still?¬† I hedge.¬† I’m gun-shy.¬† Can you blame me?¬† The closest I can come to saying it is this: I might be training for a marathon.¬† Yeah.¬† I might also just be breaking bones and tearing tendons, too.¬† Time will tell.

But still, I’m doing this.. whatever this is.¬†¬† I’m doing it because when I started this blog two years ago I meant to do it, and I still mean to do it.¬† I want to do it.¬† A lot.¬† Then, I want to check it off my list and move on with my life, and maybe even blog about something else.¬† Like cats.¬† Or the tomato¬†jungle that has taken over my garden.

So really, it is about time I got on with it.¬† I’m not getting any younger, and the days where I have 3+ hours to go running may not last forever.¬† It’s time to put down the sauce, and put on my big girl pants.¬† My big girl running pants.

Just please do not tell me to break a leg.

I wrote an entire post, and then the internetz ate it.  Damn.

Basically, just imagine that this is a lengthy post in which I complain about my grass allergy and running indoors.¬† Imagine some profanity too, because I’m thinking plenty of that.

Also know that I recently had the first of many 29th birthdays, and I received a Jade yoga mat (midnight blue) and some sweet calf sleeves for my wonky legs.  I even modeled them for you in a blurry photo, with appropriately sweaty hair.

Sultry.  I know.  WTF else can you do when it is 85 degrees in May?

Note: there are no numbers that start with a “W” and therefore go with Wednesday.¬† It is a shame.

5.¬† My new job is going swell!¬† I have many weeks of training, so that can be a little slow, but really it is a stretch to find any complaint at all.¬† Everyone is nice enough, I take SEVERAL breaks, and I leave after 8 hours.¬† No one seems psychopathic so far, either.¬† I’m in heaven.

4.  Speaking of taking things slow, we spent the entire afternoon yesterday taking and discussing this personality test.  If you are curious, I am Gold with Blue as a strong second.  I was actually working on a to-do list while his was happening, but then put it away because I was feeling little embarrassed.  I wish I were more Orange. 

I made Mike do it too, and he is also a Gold and Green is his second.  So we are pretty much as exciting as a root canal over here.  Oh, and stay off our lawn, kids.

3.  I finished my staycation project of building a garden and weeding/mulching the back flower beds.

I filled six lawn bags with weeds and debris.¬† SIX.¬† The garden is in the back right corner.¬† So far so good, except for one stomped strawberry plant (unknown critter).¬† I also lost a cucumber plant to a late frost despite covering.¬† I’m such a newb, so I am sure these will not be the only casualties back there this summer.

2.¬† In yoga on Monday, I actually got into crow for the first time.¬† I mean, I didn’t hold it for long, but I actually managed to get all toes off the ground.¬† I’ve been flirting with this for about a year, but crow plays hard to get.

I looked exactly like this.

1.¬† I’m trying to switch back over to morning workouts now that I don’t despise getting out of bed in the morning.¬† This combined with the fact that I am home from work before 5pm has left me loads of free time.¬† Loads.¬† My laundry is finished, and I have as much time as I need for YA dystopian novels.¬† We all have bad habits.

It seems that I have taken an unintentional hiatus from blogging.  A lot of life has been happening over here.

Most notably, I quit my job.

This is not as crazy as it sounds.¬† My job was horrible.¬† My boss was a tyrant.¬† I tried not to discuss these things on the blog because it is probably¬†unwise to rage on your boss over the internets, as well-deserved and true as it all may be.¬† For the past year I have not liked my job.¬† That is fine to a certain extent, but things were really crossing a line.¬† Starting in January, my workload increased even more, and I began having serious stress-related stomach issues.¬† I had to see my doctor, and start taking prescription stomach meds 3-4 times per day.¬† I’m already unhappy that I have to take thyroid meds one time every day, so you can imagine how much this cramped my style.¬† Plus, they were only marginally effective, and my stomach issues continued to interrupt my life, especially running.¬† If you run, you know how stomach problems¬†are the nail in the coffin of any run.¬†

So, I had big plans for spring training that did not happen.¬† I felt depressed and burnt out all the time.¬† I saw some ugly sides of the practice of law that I do not know if I will recover from.¬† I didn’t feel like myself, and I didn’t even feel like blogging.¬† Besides, what would I blog about?¬† I don’t want the blog to be a negative place, and all my thoughts were negative.

At that point, I had been looking for a new job for awhile.  I had been to interviews, but there had been no offers.  Mike and I decided that I would quit my job regardless, and focus on finding a new job full-time.  When I was unemployed, I would have never imagined that I would do this.  But, sometimes you have to take responsibility for your happiness, even when things are not going your way.  Even if you are choosing between a rock and a hard place, there is a choice.  When you are laid off from your job, you feel like everything is happening to you.  Now, in the opposite position, I was able to feel how empowering it is to push back a little.

So I chose to be a person who wants to be happy, even if that might mean more unemployment.  I am so lucky to have so many friends and colleagues that looked after me throughout this entire ordeal.  I followed a job lead from my friend Jillian (thank you!!), and 10 days after I put my notice in, I got a job offer.  I start next week.

Rarely have things worked out so perfectly career-wise for me in the past few years, and I am so full of gratititude.¬† I am looking forward to my new job, which involves work that I care about,¬†and taking a break from practicing law and having clients.¬† Maybe I will find my way back to it one day.¬† Or, maybe the “great recession” has sent my career spiraling¬†down a completely unexpected path.¬† I don’t know.¬† For the first time since I graduated high school, I have no career plan.¬† My plan is to be happy.

I am so happy to report that I have not taken any of my prescription stomach meds since I quit my job.¬† I’m feeling healthier and lighter, like the world has been lifted from my shoulders.¬† The take-home messages?

1. It turns out that unemployment is NOT the worst thing that can happen to you. Irooooony.

2. Money will not buy you happiness.  I know that we all know this, but I feel like I KNOW this now.

3. Your friends are your biggest asset.  Someday your plan will fall apart and you will need help.  I had a lot of help.  And, even though this job was the pits, I was lucky enough to make many new friends that were just as miserable as me.  Friendships last a lot longer than bad employment situations. 

I plan to resume normal blogging now.  My staycation project is building a garden and raking up enormous amounts of pine needles.  Life is good!

We survived the crown moulding project, if you are wondering.¬† It took about a weekend.¬† The verdict?¬† It is a lot harder than it looks… especially since the last time I took a geometry class was in ninth grade, and all we did was gossip and play with blocks.¬† Oh, that sounds like kindergarten, you say?¬† Yeah.

I also painted the ceiling.  Check out that slightly whiter ceiling.  Boom.

We have also started turning this pea green princess room into a non-hideous office.  Before:

We still need new door casings (we tore the old lead-painty ones down).  This and some sanding resulted in a lead paint cloud. 

Unfortunately, the cats were not interested in wearing masks.  I tried.
